Jonah
From the Cana Song Collection

"Jonah." "Jonah", called the Lord.
He called "Jonah", but Jonah just ignored.

Well, he got on board a big ship, that headed out to sea,
but the Lord, He kept on calling him, "Jonah, follow me."
He called "Jonah." "Jonah", called the Lord,
He called "Jonah", but Jonah just ignored.

Well, the sea it was a boiling, and the waves were getting deep,
and all on board were sore afraid that they would surely sink.
They hollered, "Jonah", listen to your Lord.
They hollered "Jonah", then they threw him overboard!

[Well, up swam a big fish the biggest you ever did see,
and swallowed that old Jonah, then dove into the sea.
Then, Jonah started praying, "O, Lord deliver me.
I promise that I'll do what you ask, if you will set me free."]

He prayed, "Save me! Save me won't you, Lord."
He prayed, "Save me! And send me back to shore."
Well, up swam that big fish from deep within the sea.
He coughed and coughed with a ole heave-ho and...
Jonah was set free!

[from the Book of Jonah in the great collection of books - the Bible]

This age-old story of choosing one's own selfish way, shows clearly how it can lead to torment and confusion. Somewhere along the way we have to step down from our self-centered throne and recognize that we are not the center of the universe. We are truly alive when we reach beyond ourselves into the lives of others in a compassionate and loving way.
